Steve McQueen : The Man & Le Mans

Finally released in the UK in 2017 and already available in the rest of the world, the documentary film interweaves original insight and revelation with a remarkable sound archive – as well as hours of never-before-seen film that has remained, until now, untouched in a Los Angeles basement.

THE MAN & LE MANS takes the viewer inside the mind of this driven, complex movie idol as he fought to save his film – set to the soundtrack of his own voice. Ultimately, McQueen was vindicated. Today Le Mans is regarded as the ‘purest’ motor racing film every made.

Executive Producer Andrew Marriott, whose idea the film is based on, has covered Le Mans on more than 40 occasions. In addition, archive producer Richard Wiseman has worked on two most recent notable Formula 1 films – Ron Howard's RUSH and REVOLUT1ON, the first-ever history-of-Formula 1 film.

The film, directed by John McKenna and Gabriel Clarke, was one of only two British films accepted for the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it received its worldwide premiere and it was the lead film at the Bologna Biografilm Festival. The film was also shown at 2015 London Film Festival but commercial issues halted a full UK release, although this was subsequently remedied. In most territories the film is available through Amazon as a DVD or download and to view on major airlines. In 2020 the film was shown on BBC4 to great reviews.

In 2017 the film won the overall Red Award as well as awards for Best Documentary and Best Editing at the London Motor Film Awards.

The film includes never before seen rushes from the original movie, interviews with Chad McQueen, Steve's first wife Neile Adams, racing drivers Derek Bell, David Piper and the late Jonathan Williams as well as producers , directors and movie executives involved with be original film. There is an original music score and chilling news footage of mass murderer Charles Manson who had McQueen on his death list.

Andrew is working on a follow up feature film which is currently in development with John and Gabriel which will follow a tragic tale of two 1970s Formula 1 racers.
